Tea Tasting Session - Choco Chou Black Tea

Updated: Jun 1, 2020

Today, I just got in the mail some free samples from the tea company Camellia Sinensis based in Canada! So I couldn't resist trying out some of their teas and the very first one that I tried was their take on a chocolate black tea called Choco Chou!

Please note that today's tea tasting is not in any way sponsored, the tea I am tasting has been given to me for free from Camellia Sinensis but isn't in anyway hindering my views or thoughts on my review on this tea due to the fact that I am honest with my audience. Links as always will be posted at the bottom!

To begin with, let's take a look at my tea setup and the packaging for the tea!

My usual tea setup is as shown, my usual Jianshui teapot that I use for most if not all teas that I try as I love it to death! Whilst also using my Gong Fu Code Mei Leaf tea tray and my Jianzhan teacup!

The actual packaging of the tea looks really impressive and quirky. The material is paper-like and is actually sealable so you can keep your tea safe and sound!

The tea in itself is a flavoured tea, but contains black tea leaves and doesn't specify what kind of black tea but after tasting, it tastes like a traditional Chinese black tea, nothing special or fancy however still satisfying to drink due to the fact that the flavour is not purely just the black tea, and rather the chocolate flavours as well mixed in.

The quality of the leaves look decent, nothing fantastic however still looks delicious!

Now onto brewing the tea! I decided to go for gong fu style brewing in my Jianshui teapot to allow for the maximum flavour and tasting notes to come out.

Upon smelling the dry leaves, it smells very chocolatey but not artificial or fake-like, but rather very rich and deep in the smell with a waft of black tea smells coming through. All in all smells amazing!

I didn't bother to rinse this tea due to the fact that it is a flavoured tea, and I wanted to extract the full flavour in my first brew as I wasn't expecting the tea to last long and be reused.

The colour of the liquor below looks very orange-like mixed in with colours of brown, and with reason this makes sense as this is a black tea which is commonly quite dark in the colour for the liquor.

Now onto how it tastes!

Firstly, I will say that the first brew was quite strong and pungent in the smell, almost so that when I tried it, I felt like I was drinking quite a strong sugary drink, however, that immediately went away after the first pour. If I am honest, I think this may of have been down to me trying to test out how long to brew this flavoured tea.

Second brew onwards, the taste of it was nutty, chocolatey (of course) and quite woody which was a nice combination as I felt like I was drinking tea with nice sweet tones of the chocolate flavouring.

As the brews went on, I was surprised at how well the flavour of the tea kept, the strength of the flavourings was very long-lasting and left me feeling very satisfied after 4-5 brews.

Overall, I loved the tea, I think it was a great sample and I think I might buy some more of it! However, this is a very different tea for those tea connoisseurs out there due to the fact that the taste may be quite artificial for some, but for me, it was a nice balance of average quality black tea mixed in with nice chocolatey notes!

Don't forget to stay away from those tea bags, and keep with the loose leaf!
